We investigate how mucosal immunity and microbiomes shape susceptibility, disease progression, and treatment responses in HIV and reproductive health.

Using human samples, in vivo models, and advanced single-cell, spatial, multi-omic, and organoid technologies, we map immune and microbial interactions in the female genital tract and gut, and define how infections and dysbiosis disrupt epithelial and immune homeostasis.

By integrating high-resolution human cohort studies in global populations with mechanistic models,  our work uncovers pathways driving chronic inflammation, tissue dysfunction, and transmission risk, informing strategies to prevent infection and restore mucosal health globally.

Our research

The Kwon Lab research focuses on three main themes:

Understanding immunity and host-microbe interactions in the female genital tract

Characterizing HIV disease progression in the gut

Translating discoveries to improve human health
